Mentorship Reflection

The Mentorship project was very intriguing for me. I found that I had difficulties commenting on the Consumer Math class as I had never taken any classes like that when I was in high school and therefore found it difficult to connect some of the concepts. When the calculus classes were added, however, I was happy as I also took the Calculus AP in high school and could relate to the concepts and challenges of taking a university level course in high school. The only problem that I found in reading their daily posts was that the students commonly explained the content so adequately that I could not think of anything that I could comment and therefore I only made a couple of comments to the blog although I read it on a regular basis. I found that for the BOB posts, it was difficult to make comments on them because I was commonly only able to read them the day of the test or even after the test had already taken place. I fully intend to continue to follow the Calculus AP class as I have experienced the stress and reliefs of writing the exam which is issued by the College Board in May and want to be able to help them anticipate some of the questions that may arise while they are studying.

I see having a daily blog with scribes for each class to be a very effective tool within the classroom. Not only does this help any students who may have not been in attendance for the class due to illnesses etc. but it also allows the students to learn in the most effective way: teaching. At first a blog for calculus seemed was confusing for me as I was unable to see how they would demonstrate the many techniques used in problems and various questions but through the tools such as SlideShare, the students were able to make well-explained posts that could help their peers to remember the content. I would definitely use this technique especially in an English or History class as I see it would work very well as a weekly writing assignment or great way to incorporate technology into the classroom and have the students reflect on literature or the daily discussions and/or activities in the classroom.

Tech Task #7: Remember the Milk

Remember the Milk is a website that would be extremely useful in the classroom. Many teachers set up deadlines and due dates and have to tell their students multiple times when things are due. Remember the Milk allows you to set up task lists and even maps where they are to take place. This would be beneficial as a place where you can put your deadlines up and share them with the students that are in your classes and would work as a “24/7″ way of verifying for the students. This would also give a means of helping the students keep track of their assignments etc for other classes and activities in a digital format that is more appealing to todays’ youth.
